P-P-Peaches! | June 14, 2021

FRESH & LOCAL:

P-P-Peaches!

Juneteenth, an annual holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States, has been celebrated by African-Americans since the late 1800s and will be celebrated this Saturday, June 19th. The holiday is steeped in tradition of red foods, symbolizing the blood of the millions of enslaved people who suffered and died. In many West African cultures, red is also a symbol of strength, spirituality, and life and death.

The cultural legacy of okra, beans, melons, rice, and many other foods - some red, some not - were brought across the Atlantic and are shared on our tables today. This week, stock up on red foods like creole tomatoes, peaches, red beans, and watermelon to celebrate. For inspiration, check out these recipes crafted by Black creators, like the recipe of the week!

Alert! Peaches are available at all markets, including the City Park market on Sundays from 8-12pm, now hybrid! Featuring drive-thru pre-order pick up from 8am to 9:45am and walk up sales from 10am to noon. Pre-order through WhatsGood Wednesday through Friday!

Shop the Box

What's in the box? Need fresh, local produce (like first of the season peaches!) from CCFM vendors delivered to your door? Shop the CCFM Box! Weekly boxes go on sale on Tuesday mornings at 9am through Fridays at 5pm to be delivered on the following Tuesday. Order one this week!

Both boxes qualify for purchase through our Market Match program for SNAP benefit shoppers, doubling your buying power and cutting the price in half! Choose “pay at pickup” and Top Box will contact you directly to process your SNAP payment and to apply your dollar for dollar match.

Peaches

It’s June y’all, and you know what that means? Peach season! While you know them for their blueberries, you may have already spotted Poche Family Farm with the first peaches of the season. As of this week you’ll also find peaches from our friends at Cherry Creek Orchards located in Pontotoc, MS at all of our markets and in home delivery boxes. Local peaches are picked when ripe, so they’re fresh, juicy and delish - come get your peach fix!

When buying peaches, look for those that are firm or just starting to soften up. Store them at room temperature away from direct light until fully ripe. Once soft, put them in your fridge and eat within five days for maximum freshness and flavor. If you’re like us, you may get excited while buying and purchase more than you can eat. Luckily, peaches are great to freeze so don’t be afraid to stock up and keep enjoying them all summer long.

Cherry Creek Orchards

Everyone’s favorite summer stone fruit is back in abundance. Warm and fuzzy welcomes to Cherry Creek Orchards! Cherry Creek hails from Pontotoc, Mississippi--a state that boasts great growing soil which supports all sorts of peach varieties up and down the state line. They are a long-beloved vendor at CCFM, easily recognizable by their bright orange and red sign and with Dennis, the ultimate farm hand, heading the stand. RECIPES OF THE WEEK:

Spiced Grilled Peaches

Grilled fruit, like these Spiced Grilled Peaches, are a classic summer favorite. Desserts like these go great after many summertime hits like hot dogs, burgers, sandwiches -- and you can even add them to your salad! Coming together with simple pantry staples like sugar and olive oil, these grilled peaches are a very simple way to enjoy your daily fruit serving. A scoop of ice cream on top is never a bad idea as well. Andy, the recipe author, calls for five spice seasoning which contains cinnamon, cloves, star anise, white pepper, and fennel. Nutmeg, a pinch of black pepper, and cardamom are some easy substitutes if you don’t have all the spices.
