Hurricane Season | June 21, 2021 |
FRESH & LOCAL:Hurricane SeasonWhat does hurricane season mean for the market? While we are open rain or shine, safety is our top priority. It’s important to remember that some vendors travel an hour or more to our markets, so even if the weather is fine where we are, it may not be the case at their home or farm. Furthermore, rain events can impact a farmer's ability to grow and pick produce, and a fisher’s ability to catch. If the weather is looking notably bad, check our social media or give us a call for changes in market schedule. However, we’re not afraid of a little (or a lot of!) rain so expect us to be out and selling whenever possible. Also, please note that in the off chance of a market cancellation, any online orders will be automatically cancelled. But placing them lets vendors know how to prepare for markets and ensures that if it all blows over (like this past weekend!), your order will still be there waiting for you. Have a safe hurricane season y’all! |

VENDOR OF THE WEEK:Poché Family FarmHearty, long-lasting vegetables seem to be a trademark of the Pochés. The family farm is located in Independence, Louisiana, a fitting name considering the labor force is solely made up of the family. Charise (who you’ll see weekly at market) and Albert, and their children Billie and Camille focus on sustainable agriculture by using natural fertilizers, organic pesticides, cover crops for soil maintenance, and unheated structures for weather resistance called high tunnels. The farm was started with the intent to grow nourishing food to feed their family, and now that dedication is carried through in all their crops as they’ve expanded the business to feed many families through our markets. Stop by the stand for a wide variety of produce such as peppers, melons, summer and winter squash, tomatoes, greens, potatoes, eggplants, turmeric, cucumbers, and eggs! |
RECIPES OF THE WEEK:Green Tomato SalsaAdapted from a NYT recipe with a few quick fixes to ensure the best flavor, this vegan recipe is a great way to use up the green tomatoes that have been sitting proudly at market stands the past few weeks. If you do not have a food processor, chop as fine as you can get it works perfectly. Salsas do not have to be pretty--once you get your veggies nice and homogenous it’s sure to be a party! Pick up green tomatoes at produce stands such as Faust Farms, the Monica’s, and get them along with homemade tortilla chips at Isabel’s Tamales and More! What’s your favorite dish to make after visiting the Crescent City Farmers Market? Share your recipes with us on Instagram or Facebook or even Twitter and it might be featured in our weekly newsletter! |
