FRESH & LOCAL:

Shrimp! Shrimp! Shrimp!

While we may be in the thick of crawfish season, let us not forget about our other favorite Louisiana seafood - shrimp! This Tuesday, May 10th marks National Shrimp Day and you better believe we have a number of suggestions for how you can celebrate. As an important part of our region's cuisine, shrimp is a staple of many Cajun and Creole dishes. They can be boiled, fried, stewed in a Creole sauce or an étouffée, stuffed with breadcrumbs and rice, and found in gumbos and jambalayas. Shrimping has a long history in South Louisiana and we are proud to offer the “fruit of the sea” at each of our markets, but just like any fruit you’re likely not going to see it all year round. This time of year you’ll find brown shrimp available, as opposed to white shrimp in the fall. Brown shrimp have a strong flavor that goes great with robust dishes like gumbo and jambalaya, whereas white shrimp can be a little sweeter. No matter how you choose to celebrate this special day, just be sure not to skimp on locally caught shrimp, available in various sizes, whole or peeled and deveined at any CCFM!

We are pleased to say we exceeded our $12,000 goal for #GiveNOLADay 2022, thanks to you! There are many great nonprofits working to build a stronger New Orleans, and Market Umbrella is grateful to have your support. We sincerely thank you for helping sustain our markets and programs.

Market Umbrella’s food access initiatives such as Market Match, our dollar-for-dollar matching program for shoppers who pay with SNAP benefits, rely on donations to determine how much we can match each market visit. With this support, we can encourage more families to make fresh, local produce a consistent staple in their meals.

Your donations also help our local farmers and food producers, who bring beautiful and delicious fruits, veggies, and other goods to our markets each week. Market Umbrella offers professional development training to our vendors at no cost. On top of that, your support makes it possible for us to cultivate thriving public markets where the community can gather and celebrate our marvelous food culture, and that benefits us all!

Market Umbrella serves local farmers and improves food access in and around New Orleans. Thank you for believing in our mission to cultivate the field of public markets for public good and for helping us continue to grow and expand. We can't wait to show you all the good we're doing with your support.

VENDOR OF THE WEEK:

Pete & Clara’s Seafood

As a founding vendor of the Tuesday market, Pete & Clara’s Seafood is an essential part of the CCFM community! Everything they sell was caught the previous day and is directly delivered to you and local chefs by their own hands — the freshest, healthiest, most local and sustainable seafood you can get anywhere in New Orleans — some might say it's shrimply the best around! Pete does the fishing, mostly in Lakes Pontchartrain and Borne, while his daughter, Christina, does the processing and selling. Find them both at market Tuesdays and Thursdays and make sure you're swinging by early to ensure you are getting the freshest seafood in town!

RECIPE OF THE WEEK:

Shrimp Scampi

For National Shrimp Day, try this delicious shrimp scampi recipe which can be made using fresh shrimp from the market. While you’re at it, pick up some bread to serve alongside from one of our fresh bread vendors, or add fresh pasta from Costantini Pasta, new to the Thursday market!
