News from the Ignatian Yoga Community

The Prophetic Imagination

"It is the vocation of the prophet to keep alive the ministry of imagination, to keep on conjuring and proposing alternative futures to the single one the king wants to urge as the only thinkable one." -Walter Brueggemann
IMAGINE ANOTHER WAY OF BEING

When so much is uncertain and unstable,
When we are overwhelmed by violence, suffering and sadness,
When we feel like we are on the brink of change,
The prophets speak.

Prophets emerge at critical moments in history,
turning points for communities on the precipice of change.
They strongly and unapologetically denounce injustice.
They also offer faith and hope.

The prophets tell us that this is not the way the world should be
and
that another world is possible.

The prophets invite us to imagine another way of being.

Staying Well and Living Lovingly

Staying Well and Living Lovingly

Sometimes, it helps to sit in the tide pool.
Let everything swirl around you: the anxiety, the worry, the chaos, the fear and uncertainty.
Let yourself settle. The water will continue to move.
Sometimes, it helps to sit and settle.
How do we stay well and live lovingly at a time like this?
As all the uncertainty swirls around us, as we settle into this "new (temporary) normal," some of our deeper desires emerge: the desire to care, the desire to connect, the desire to love. We notice that staying well during the turmoil of COVID-19 doesn't just mean hand washing. Staying well means calling a friend, picking up groceries for a neighbor, and playing with my kids. Staying well means praying for those who are suffering from this disease and whose lives are most impacted. Staying well means caring for myself in social isolation: setting an intention for each day, embracing quiet time, and discovering a new routine.

We are all doing our best to navigate these waters.
We will make mistakes. We will get discouraged and frustrated.
We will get scared.
As we fumble through how to be, let us gently remind ourselves that we won't get everything right.
We can't live perfectly; but we can live lovingly and trust that God is with us in the struggle.
Ignatian Yoga would like to share our desires to care and connect with you.
Here are some resources to help you sit and settle, to help you find words to pray, and to inspire you to live lovingly.

Ignatian Yoga Newsletter - September 2018

Ignatian Yoga Newsletter:
September 2018
Christ of Havana, in Havana, Cuba.

St. Augustine said, "Thou hast made us for thyself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless until they find their rest in thee." Our dissatisfaction could, therefore, be the admission and awakening of our longing for the eternal. Rather than being simply the edge of some personal emptiness, it could be the first step in the opening up of our eternal belonging...desire cultivates dissatisfaction in the heart with what is, and kindles an impatience for that which has not yet emerged...There should always be a healthy tension between the life we have settled for and the desires that still call us. In this sense our desires are the messengers of our unlived life, calling us to attention and action while we still have time here to explore fields where the treasure dwells!

~John O'Donohue in "To Bless the Space Between Us"

Reflect

Like many of you, the recent news of the Grand Jury report in Pennsylvania and subsequent revelations continues to weigh on our minds and hearts. We'd like to share a reflection from Bobby Karle, SJ, as one perspective on these events that are far from over.

The same day as the release of the Grand Jury report in Pennsylvania on Tuesday, August 14, I moved to Berkeley, California, for the final three years of Jesuit formation to become a Catholic priest. On August 15, I began a five-day training with Off the Mat, Into the World, an organization bridging yoga, self-inquiry, social justice and activism.

The first couple days after the report, I remained in the bubble of the yoga training and my new setting. By Friday, the gravity of this scandal weighed on me in a way I could no longer run from. I felt shame, embarrassment, anger, sadness. I didn’t cause the scandal, but that didn’t matter. I am part of it. I would have to face up to it and pay for what so many wounded “leaders” inflicted and then covered up.

And now the yoga begins.

Ignatian Yoga Summer 2018 Newsletter

Ignatian Yoga Newsletter Summer 2018

"The world is charged with the grandeur of God." - Gerard Manley Hopkins

Dear friends of Ignatian Yoga,

We hope you are having a fun filled summer! 2018 has been an exciting and active year for Ignatian Yoga!

Some of the highlights:
  • 3 sold out weekend retreats: Ossining, NY, Milford, OH, and Parma, OH
  • Workshops at Boston College and the College of the Holy Cross
  • Strategic planning at the Jesuits Midwest Province in Chicago, IL
We've met some wonderful people along the journey and are slowly expanding our network of teachers and partner organizations.

As we move into Fall, Ignatian Yoga will be slowing down it's offerings as Alan and Bobby both go back to graduate school. Alan will be studying Social Work at Wayne State University in Detroit, MI, and Bobby will be studying Theology at the Jesuit School of Theology in Berkeley, CA, for his final three years of priestly formation.

Ignatian Yoga has been very blessed with support from the Jesuit Midwest Province and from the many of you who make our offerings possible. As we trust in the slow work of God, we are very consoled with the graces we have received, and are excited to bring to life so many visions for the future!

Help us build a new website!!

Win a free Ignatian Yoga weekend for an upcoming retreat of your choice by filling out this survey to help us construct a new website. To qualify for the free weekend please fill out the survey completely, list your email, and submit by Monday, July 23. Winner will be randomly selected and notified after the 23rd.

Here's What You Have to Say:

We continue to be humbled and inspired by your feedback! Read what some of our participants had to say about their recent weekend retreats:

"This was a meaningful retreat in which I gained insight into myself; I now reflect on how God has and does guide me (how I 'listen to God'). The retreat has made me more accepting of myself and to celebrate my uniqueness!"

"It was one of the most inspiring and meaningful things I have done for myself."

"The Ignatian Yoga retreat provided an opportunity to experience the synthesis of two spiritual traditions that complement each other perfectly. My faith deepened and I gained clarity on an important question while staying physically active during the weekend."

"I would recommend this to anyone and everyone. I've never done anything like this before and I really enjoyed the balance of learning (about Ignatian spirituality), Yoga practice, quiet/meditation, relaxation, time to socialize, etc. After this experience Yoga means something different to me. There is an element of prayer and reflection in my practice. As a graduate of a Jesuit school I appreciated reconnecting with the spiritual exercises."
