This Week at the New Orleans Museum of Art ("NOMA")

COURAGE AND CARE

This week NOMA will host a Virtual Family Festival along with a Teen Summer Series workshop and a Community Sketchbook activity open to all. From online outreach to open doors, NOMA welcomes visitors through our website and on site.

NOMA is open Wednesday through Sunday, 10 am to 5 pm. The Besthoff Sculpture Garden on the same days, from 9:30 am to 5 pm. New guidelines are in place to ensure a safe and enjoyable visit. Prepaid, contactless ticketing is encouraged for museum visits. Wednesdays remain free for Louisiana residents courtesy of The Helis Foundation. 

COURAGE AND CARE 

Join us for a free Virtual Family Festival under the theme Courage and Care for Saturday, August 22, from 11 am to 3 pm. Advance registration is required for select sessions.

COMMUNITY SKETCHBOOK

Reflect and create with us through weekly sketchbook prompts. All ages, experience levels, and art-making mediums are welcome.    

TEEN SUMMER SERIES

Teens are invited to participate in a series of virtual programs led by teaching artists. Join Cubs the Poet on Friday, August 21, at 4 pm for a workshop on the five senses and shaping identity.   

NEW ACQUISITION

Originally commissioned in 1967 for the lobby of the Times-Picayune, a monumental work by artist Enrique Alférez will find a new home in NOMA's renovated auditorium complex.

Free Admission to the New Orleans Museum of Art on July 4th

Wellness Classes at the New Orleans Museum of Art (NOMA)

WELLNESS CLASSES AMONG THE ARTWORKS

With spring weather upon us, enjoy the Besthoff Sculpture Garden and NOMA's galleries and a vigorous new you. NOMA, in collaboration with East Jefferson Wellness Center, offers wellness classes every Saturday morning and Monday evening.

Yoga in the Garden: Saturday, March 10, 8 - 9 am

Tai Chi/Chi Kung in the Galleries: Monday, March 12, 6 - 7 pm

Classes are $5; FREE for NOMA members and East Jefferson Wellness Center members. To register, call East Jefferson Healthfinder at 504.456.5000.

Believing in the healing power of music and the arts, we want to encourage everyone to take advantage of the free and low cost programs in the area.

Noontime Talk, Wednesday, August 2, 12 p.m.

Join Contemporary Art Curator Katie Pfohl for a tour of Pride of Place: The Making of Contemporary Art in New Orleans, an exhibition featuring more than 70 contemporary works of art donated by gallerist Arthur Roger. Noontime Talks are brief, casual discussions on exhibitions or works of art in the galleries given by NOMA curators and special guests. Wednesdays are FREE for Louisiana residents with ID thanks to The Helis Foundation.

SUMMER 2017 ARTS QUARTERLY DEBUTS AS DIGITAL EDITION
 
The Summer 2017 edition of NOMA's magazine, Arts Quarterly, debuted this week online with a host of features and event listings. We invite you to read more about Pride of Place: The Making of Contemporary Art in New Orleans, our summer-long exhibition featuring the donated collection of renowned gallerist Arthur Roger. A timeline of the history of contemporary art is included, along with a list of featured artists who will offer lectures in the weeks ahead. Additional content includes the acquisition of a Clarence John Laughlin photograph with an unusual link to the Abry Brothers shoring business, an interview with lawyer and NOMA donor Tim Fields, background on the Big Easy Chair by Ron Arad that is drawing attention in the newly imagined decorative arts galleries, and select items for sale in the NOMA Shop.

A calendar of events for the months of July, August, and September is also available for download and printing.

FRIDAY NIGHTS AT NOMA FEATURES MUSICIAN JAMES SINGLETON AND ARTIST FRANCES SWIGART-STEG

Friday Nights at NOMA, July 7, 5 - 9 p.m.

Frances Swigart-Steg, wife of the late artist Jim Steg and an artist in her own right, will share her memories and discuss the artworks of her husband whose career is the subject of the exhibition Jim Steg: New Work. The gallery talk will begin at 6 p.m.Friday Nights at NOMA programming will also include musical sets by acoustic bassist, composer, and producer James Singleton, a member of the New Orleans-based jazz group Astral Project, from 5:30 - 8:30 p.m. The family-friendly Art on the Spot activity table will be set up from 5 -8 p.m. Café NOMA by Ralph Brennan and all galleries will be open till 9 p.m.

FAMILY ACTIVITIES FOR JULY 5 - 12

StoryQuest | Saturday, July 8, 11 - 11:30 a.m. 
Professional authors, actors, and artists bring the world of children's literature to NOMA in StoryQuest, a family program that encourages museum exploration and a love of reading. The program is ideal for children ages 2-7 and is included with museum admission. 
 
FREE ADMISSION year-round for Louisiana Teens
For the summer school break ahead, request a Teen Pass that offers free admission to the museum year-round for Louisiana visitors ages 13-19, courtesy of The Helis Foundation. Visit the NOMA website for more information.

IN THE WEEKS AHEAD AT NOMA
  
Friday, July 14: Celebrate French culture in cool comfort at the Bastille Day Fête inside NOMA's Great Hall. The Bon Bon Vivant swing band will provide musical entertainment and guided tours in French and English will be offered along with French-themed children's activities and a cooking demonstration.

Friday, July 21: In conjunction with the exhibition Pride of Place, The Making of Contemporary Art in New Orleans, a John Waters Film Festival will kick off with a screening of Pink Flamingos (NC-17; no one under age 18 will be admitted). Due to an expected large audience turnout, the movie will be shown twice at 7 and 9 p.m. In the weeks ahead, mark your calendars and prepare to laugh along with:
  • July 28: Polyster (R)
  • August 4: Hairspray (PG)
  • August 11: Cry-Baby (PG-13)
  • August 18: Pecker (R)
